Educating Education Writers: OK Story

The Dallas News has a story on Beverly Dooley and her Southwest Academy, in Allen, Texas, by Lauren D'Avolio.   The story doesn't repeat any of the myths of dyslexia, but does not discuss any of  Dooley's teaching methods, either.

Dr. Dooley said her mission is for children to take pleasure in learning – and feel lovable and capable along the way.

"We want to empower children to be individuals and responsible for their own learning. We want children to do the work themselves," she said. "I love the kids. I love the challenge. If I wasn't paid a penny, I'd still do it."

However, digging into the Southwest Academy website reveals (I added the links)

Southwest Academy follows the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills curriculum standards presented in a multisensory way. We implement the Alphabetic Phonics program designed at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital. PreK-2nd grade uses Montessori materials and at the motor program was designed by Texas Scottish Rite Hospital. Multisensory typing is taught beginning at K level using the Diana King Typing Program/

Here is a link to Texas-specific dyslexia remediation and a utility that reads what you write.

(You have to love those Scottish Rite Masons.  They are providing incredible services for students with specific learning disabilities--here's a national list)
