Sean P. Humphry, 19, Alcohol-related Death
Sean P. Humphrey was lying with a cut on his head and wasn't wearing a hat, gloves or jacket when a snowplow driver found him stuck to the curb about 4:45 a.m. on Feb. 24, a night when the wind chill sent the temperature down to 12 degrees.
He had a core body temperature of 77 degrees. Autopsy results released Wednesday said he died from complications of hypothermia and alcohol intoxication.
Kehrberg said police recommended to the Carver County attorney's office that felony and gross misdemeanor charges be filed against the four suspects. Two of them were arrested this week.
At a news conference, Kehrberg said Humphrey had been drinking since the afternoon of Feb. 23, when went with another minor to a mobile home in Chaska, where a 32-year-old man allegedly served Humphrey a couple of drinks.
About 10 that night, Kehrberg said, Humphrey was served alcohol at a party at an apartment about four or five blocks from his home. Around 10 people aged 17 to 22 were there, and there was an open bar.
The detective said Humphrey was asked to leave because he was being too loud, and he left without his coat between 12 a.m. and 1 a.m.
Police are seeking felony charges against a 22-year-old man who allegedly provided alcohol at the apartment and against a 20-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman who allegedly hosted the party, as well as gross misdemeanor charges against the adult at the mobile home.
Prosecutors are reviewing the police reports for possible charges, Carver County Attorney Mike Fahey said.
"Our investigation showed that intoxication played a critical part in his death," Kehrberg said. State law allow felony charges in such cases, he added.
