Sid Skibinski-Gonzales, 19, Alcohol Poisoning

Sid Skibinski-Gonzales was partying with friends on March 3, 2007.  He drank at least 750 ml of 151 proof alcohol, thus consuming about 560 ml of alcohol.  He lost consciousness;  the friends left him alone, and he was dead the next morning.

As always, my deepest condolences to his family and friends.

I wish his friends at the party  had known  Skibinski-Gonzales was in danger of dying.

Relatives of 19-year-old Sid Skibinski-Gonzales say the tragedy never should have happened. The young man was celebrating with friends Saturday night at a home on Reseda Lane in Modesto when he drank an entire bottle of Bacardi 151 rum.

Police say he passed out shortly after. But when friends checked on him the next morning, Gonzales was dead.

Police are investigating if a parent, 42-year-old Billy Smith, who was at home during the party, played a role in the incident.

"We're not sure if he provided the alcohol or knew the young man was only 19 years old," said Modesto Police Department spokesman, Craig Gundlach.

Detectives and the district attorney's office are examining the case for possible criminal charges.

Relatives say Gonzales was kind, talented, outgoing and excited about an upcoming move to Colorado with his mom.

"He was so excited about his band and all the things he was going to do. Now he's gone and I can't believe it," said Victoria Jackson, Gonzales' cousin.

In all cases, my deepest condolences to family and friends.

Signs of Alcohol Poisoning

Alcohol depresses nerves that control involuntary actions such as breathing, the heartbeat and the gag reflex that prevents choking. A fatal dose of alcohol will eventually stop these functions. After the victim stops drinking, the heart keeps beating, and the alcohol in the stomach continues to enter the bloodstream and circulate through the system. The victim may experience the following:

  • Mental confusion, stupor, coma, unable to rouse the person
  • No response to pinching the skin
  • Vomiting while sleeping or unresponsive
  • Seizures
  • Slowed breathing  (fewer than 8 breaths per minute)
  • Irregular breathing (10 seconds or more between breaths)
  • Hypothermia (low body temperature), bluish skin color, paleness

Alcohol Poisoning Requires Immediate Medical Attention

Alcohol Poisoning Cannot Be Reversed By:

  • Drinking black coffee
  • Taking a cold bath or shower
  • Walking it off

The victim must have immediate medical attention.
Call 911, stay with the victim to prevent him choking on vomit, and tell emergency personnel how much alcohol the victim drank.

These Children Died of Alcohol Overdose, So Their Parents Started Foundations:

Taylor Webster's memorial foundation.  Taylor died of alcohol  poisoning at age 19-- Now his family and friends are working  to get the message out, telling their stories and providing  information on alcohol poisoning and the signs and symtoms  of alcohol poisoning in hopes that lives will be saved.

Bradley McCue's memorial foundation.  On November 5, 1998  Bradley turned 21. . He celebrated  his birthday in a way that has become increasingly popular, drinking "his  age in shots". That amount of alcohol was lethal and he died  that night of alcohol poisoning.

Samantha Spady's memorial foundation. A 19-year old student at Colorado State University, Spady died of alcohol poisoning on September 5, 2004, "an unintentional tragedy."  The Spadys say the SAM [Student Alcohol Management] Spady Foundation will develop peer-to-peer counseling and other services meant to reduce the risk of alcohol abuse.

Gordie Bailey's memorial foundation.   The mission of the Gordie Foundation is to provide today’s youth with the skills to navigate the dangers of alcohol, and through education and promotion of self worth prevent alcohol poisoning, binge drinking and hazing.

According to the Modesto Bee, Mr. Skibinski-Gonzales consumed a pint (474 ml) not a fifth (750 ml) of 151-proof alcohol.

About 6 p.m., friends say, he went to a small gathering at the Modesto home of Billy Smith, 42, in the 1900 block of Reseda Lane. Smith's 21-year-old son, Kayce, and Skibinski-Gonzales had become friends in the fall, when they met in a Spanish class at Modesto Junior College, Smith said.

Skibinski-Gonzales often hung out at the Smith home, playing cards and pool. He often showed up drunk, Billy Smith said.

"The first time I met him, he was staggering drunk," said Smith, who described Skibinski-Gonzales as a good guy with a lot of heart. "I had no cause to doubt he was 21."

Early in the night, Skibinski-Gonzales went with Seth Tefertiller, 26, to buy alcohol. Skibinski-Gonzales paid for a bottle of Bacardi 151 rum that Tefertiller purchased, he said.

"He said he didn't have ID," Tefertiller said. "I thought he meant he didn't have it on him."

The men returned to the party and hung out with other members of Smith's family, including Smith's 15-year-old daughter and Skibinski-Gonzales' 12-year-old brother, who was taken home shortly afterward.

Smith said he was in his room watching television when he heard Skibinski-Gonzales beginning to get boisterous. He said he went to the living room to try to calm him.

"He was incredibly drunk all of a sudden, slurring, making no sense, falling down," Smith said.

His friends eventually got him to sit down on the couch.

"I love you guys," Smith remembers Skibinski-Gonzales saying. "I'm going to miss you guys."

Skibinski-Gonzales fell asleep on the couch about 10 p.m., friends said. Smith said he covered Skibinski-Gonzales with a blanket and placed a bucket next to the couch in case he became sick. Friends continued to check on him throughout the night, said Smith and Tefertiller.

Smith's daughter, Crystal, woke up about 8:30 a.m. to let her dog outside. She saw Skibinski-Gonzales still sleeping on the couch, his eyes moving as if he were dreaming, she said.

About 10 a.m., she tried to wake him so he could go home to pack for the trip to Colorado, she said.

"Something wasn't right," she said. "His skin was clammy. My dad told me to call 911."

Paramedics arrived soon afterward and pronounced Skibinski-Gonzales dead, Gundlach said.

Skibinski-Gonzales' grandmother, Norma Gonzales of San Jose, said her grandson was a straight-A student at Davis High School. He loved to draw pictures of his family, of skateboards and action heroes.

Skibinski-Gonzales had a punk band, the Jelly Donut Gang, with his brother and girlfriend.

"He's a punk rocker," said his grandmother, "and people might think that he looks bad, but he was the sweetest grandson I could have."

Gonzales described her grandson as his mother's backbone, the kind of son who would give whatever extra money he had to his mom so that she could buy gifts for his siblings at Christmas.

Gonzales didn't know how to explain why he had had so much to drink Saturday night.

"He was celebrating the move to Colorado," she said. "He just got carried away, I guess."

The family will post details about Skibinski-Gonzales' funeral on his Web page, www.myspace.com/thejellydonutgang.

Again, my deepest condolences to his family and friends.

Hello,

This is Sid's mom I would like who gave you permission to post my son's story. The father that let my son died lied. He new my son was not 21 yrs old. He still gave him drinks. My son never went over there drunk I also dropped him off or pick him up. That father Billy Smith is trying to cover his self. I would like you to delete my son's story.
Thank You
Elena Smithson

Here's how I replied to the commenter above:

Dear Ms. Smithson,

First, please accept my condolences for your loss. I have three children, and I can only imagine your pain.

I have been writing about underage deaths from alcohol overdose since 2004, when a friend's son died needlessly (as did your son).

At the time of Gordy Bailey's death, this quote startled me:

"There's no place that's actually keeping data on alcohol deaths"--Thomas Kunstman MD

I am not an alcohol treatment professional, or a paid journalist. I am just a mom with a blog who hopes that, by continuing to publicize the tragic outcomes of binge drinking and rapid consumption of hard liquor, somebody's child will be saved from death.

Again, Ms. Smithson, I am so sorry for your loss. But I am not going to delete the story of your son's death. Somebody else may read it, and prevent a death.
