My City School (San Francisco) is a brand-new start-up. I believe it is set to open in Fall, 2013. It's a middle-school program for students with learning disabilities. I gathered from the woman I talked to at EdRev that there were students with unmet needs, so a group of parents decided to start a program.
Small Setting, Broad Learning, Extended Day
My City School connects students’ learning experiences to the real world by utilizing the incredible resources of San Francisco as extended learning laboratories. Due to the expansive daily programming, our school day usually runs from 8:30 - 5:00.
High Support & High Expectations
There is an natural dynamic for academic and social skills growth in smaller groups. which create an individual learning environment that maximizes academic opportunity and offers a supportive community. At My City School, students learn through discovery and exploration while they acquire essential skills as self-starters and independent learners.
Integrated Social and Life Skills
A strong social and life skills curriculum, which is very important to LD students, is intertwined with the academic program as there is no greater classroom for these opportunities than daily life.
Emerging adolescents are constantly reminded of their roles as leaders and responsible citizens in our community as they actively participate in thoughtfully organized service programs and environmental stewardship.
My City School provides academic and social support for its students during the school day but does not provide additional therapies that individual students may need. Our teaching team for the launch class is experienced in working with a range of learning styles, but is not able to accommodate students with spectrum disorders or behavioral challenges. However, we are interested in sharing our planning process with families who wish to take initiatve to replicate this model for a wider range of learning challenges.
At its launch, My City School will be entirely funded by participating families with the capacity to pay tuition commensurate with peer schools in the area. Financial assistance is not currently available.
It looks like a promising program. I will look forward to following the progress of My City School.
