Many families with elementary school children face daily homework battles -- which both parents and children dread.
A little-known cause of these battles is that many children struggle with handwriting -- their written work embarrasses them, handwriting is physically difficult for them, or producing handwritten work takes up so much mental effort that they aren't really showing what they know.
I can help.
I am trained in Handwriting Without Tears (HWT), and use the teaching principles from HWT and my own background in teaching various sports to help children whose schools use other handwriting systems (Zanner-Blosser, D'Nealian, and others) to develop fast and accurate handwriting.
If the child does not make significant progress in accuracy and speed after 15 hours of tutoring, the child's issues may be beyond my scope. I have a referral list of local Occupational Therapists (OTs) who may be of further assistance.
Some children struggle with reading.
I can help.
Depending upon the child's needs, I use The Barton Method of Reading and Spelling, Funnix, and several fluency programs to help children achieve grade-level or above reading speeds and comprehension.
Some children struggle with math.
Some of those children who struggle with math or arithmetic in the early grades have underlying handwriting issues. Others need more practice with physical representations of math ("manipulatives") before moving on to abstract math problems (11+19=?). I have the skills and tools to help such children.
Some children with attentional issues need more structured practice
Attentional issues are the core problem in ADHD and are also present in some people with autism. Handwriting issues are also common in ADHD and autism. Structured, direct practice can improve these students' handwriting.
