Dyslexia program took student to the head of the class | General.
Beth Ravelli took her to specialists; she attended programs in schools miles from home. Nothing helped. In her research, Beth discovered Ocean City’s Wilson Program, so mother and daughters moved here, while Beth’s husband John remained in their Weymouth Township home (they spent weekends together). Sammie soared.
The Wilson program – which helps dyslexic students “de-code” letters and words – made a reader of her. But it took years of painstaking effort.
Dyslexia is a brain disorder that makes it difficult to process words and sounds. With individual tutoring, Sammie finished the 12-step program in four years.
As she watched her daughter overcome numerous challenges and blossom, Beth couldn’t shake the notion that only a move to Ocean City saved her future. She thought of others who were not “blessed,” as she was, to be able to travel to the shore and buy a condo. She and Sammie turned their focus to the others.
