When I was a kid I USED to be smart. I attribute that to my kids teaching me to read as early as possible. I remember going to the first day of Kindergarten when some of the other kids couldn't read and feeling contempt for them. Well, maybe not contempt, but I thought they were dumb :)

Everything you post about schools makes me really feel blessed for having a family that encouraged me to read and explore, for parents who where involved in my education, even in high school, and for all of the amazing teachers I was lucky enough to have. (I suspect, though, that this is a more usual experience in GATE programs, than in more "mainstream" classes.)
