Boots on the ground, tents on the way up.
Heard from my nephew Jesse Robbins.
Here's the deal: As of Saturday, Sept. 17, 2005, Jesse is in Gulf Port, Mississippi, with Bruce LeBel (CEO, WorldShelters.
They have met with American Red Cross (ARC) logistics staff to discuss optimum deployment in the Mississippi counties most affected by Katrina:
- Hancock
- Harrison
- Jackson
- Pearl River
- Stone
- George
Hancock County has the greatest need. The WorldShelters team has been to the Hancock County Emergency Operations Center (back in operation after being flooded with 12 to 18 inches of water during the storm surge).
Hancock County EOC assigned team to the Mass Care unit.
Sunday September 18, 2005, the team will perform a deployment survey for all 50 shelters.
Here is a map of Mississippi counties
Details:
- Hancock County county seat, Bay St. Louis
- Harrison County county seat, Gulfport and Biloxi
- Jackson County, county seat, Pascagoula
- Pearl River County county seat, Poplarville
- Stone County, county seat, Wiggins
- George County, county seat, Lucedale
World Shelters base camp will be at Stennis Space Center, which is in Hancock county on the Alabama border.
Other news:
The city of Waveland in Hancock County — as did a significant number of other Gulf Coast communities and entire counties — essentially saw its entire local tax base obliterated by Hurricane Katrina. "For many of these local governments, there's nothing left to tax," said Mississippi Association of Supervisors Assistant Executive Director Joel Yelverton.

I have been looking for some good basic information on the areas of Mississippi that need help the most - very useful stuff here. Thanks, and the best to your nephew in his shelter work.
