There are a number of problems that this study might have, given the little bit of information provided. The first is that they're not controlling for other conditions that might lead to parents' talking more and children having higher IQ, such as ... higher parent IQ. Or parent education. Or parental involvement in child rearing.

They also fail to distinguish between the sheer words spoken and the number of different words spoken. This is part of a larger issue - how much does the content of the words spoken matter? If parents babble a stream of nonsense word, is that the same?
