As a red-head (well, a gray head now) and a step-child, I've always cringed a little when people use the phrase "red-headed step-child." Whether used in a context of physical abuse or simple exclusion, when I hear it I feel outcast.

p.s. pleez come on back to my place and trade Scoble jokes about comment moderation.

As a red-head, I thought I'd heard it all, but this beating phrase and the explanation for its beginnings is new to me.

I know at various times and places throughout history, red-heads have been thought to be devils or gods/goddesses, but that's a whole other story.
