I don't think it's particularly easy when either parent is older - my (now 18-year old) cousin was born when her parents were already in their 40s, which doesn't seem so old except that both of them were already suffering from significant health issues. Now they are trying to simultaneously pay for college without losing the little retirement funds they have.

But I think it applies to both the mother and father, whereas many of the popular media articles seem to focus solely on the mother's age. When an older man becomes a father, people admire his virility or spunk, particularly if his partner is a younger woman. There ARE medical issues involved in older women having pregnancies, but I am tempted think it's more of a cultural double standard than a genuine concern for maternal health.
