Mike Cassidy

Liz, sorry to take so long to respond. I was away from the office for the second half of December. I'm still trying to catch up.
You pose some good questions, which I'll try to answer briefly. I see my blog as an extension of my column.
While a column is very liberating, it does have some restrictions. Mine runs twice a week and is usually about 800 words. Many times I'll have an idea that can't wait for my column to cycle around. Sometimes I'll have an idea that really isn't worth 800 words -- or worth putting a reader through those 800 words to make a point.
As I've written before, I'm not interested in being pinned down to one subject area, which accounts for the diversity of my topics. I realize that's an obstacle to building regular readership. For now, that's a trade-off I'm willing to make.
I'm sure the blog and my thoughts about it will evolve.
My blogging principles (which will no doubt also evolve) are to be interesting or entertaining or both. I want to reach people I might not reach through the column. More importantly, I want hear from people I might not otherwise hear from.
Many times I'll write a column and receive a number of emails challenging the column or adding to the column or adding thoughts in a new direction. It seems to me a blog is more accessible, immediate and open when it comes to that sort of exchange.
Newspapers are changing rapidly and we are all looking for new ways to tell stories. A blog certainly isn't the most radical, but it was instantly available to me and so I thought I should seize it.
Thanks for taking the time to consider my work.
