I don't think all kids fit neatly into those three categories, although I do fear that many teachers think they do. My older son shows great responsibility for doing homework, but can't do it on his own even with the homework helpers. Accountability is not much of a reinforcer for him (he's already very accountable), and so it turns into a punishment. Although, for my younger son, this strategy would be very effective.

I do like the idea of giving choices for homework.

At our middle school, we have block scheduling, so there is a built in extra day to get stuff done, which is nice. Certain homework assignments are graded. Every class has homework every night, including band.
