I started a new collection today:
They're melamine plates, manufactured by LeCadeaux.com. The pattern name is Benidorm. Dishwasher safe (but not microwaveable, which is fine).
Mine were a birthday gift from the darling daughter, purchased at a local gift shop. They are also available on-line through Distinctive Decor.com , Touch of Europe.net, The Frenchy Bee and Amazon When you factor in shipping, prices are pretty close.
We eat outside when the weather permits and I wanted some unbreakable plates to go with the polycarbonate glassware. I have the Vivaldi polycarbonate mugs by Strahl, which are incredibly satisfactory. I also plan on acquiring some multi-use 8 oz glasses, like these from Strahl.
I love our melamine bowls. I also hopehopehope there's nothing awful leaching out of them every time we use them. We never nuke them, but some of what we have in them is pretty much boiling hot. Pho, etc.
As you probably already know, polycarbonate plastics contain BPA, so try not to microwave, at the least. :-) Sorry...I'm always wearing a toxicology hat underneath all these other chapeax of mine).

Listen to the Emily, she knows what she is talking about.
I pretty much only microwave in or on glass (I bought some glass plates for just that purpose).

But don't follow my bad French spelling. Chapeaux...
I also try to stick with glass for microwaving.
