The C Lazy U is a dude ranch and resort in Granby, Colorado. It's at Lat 40.1566 Long -105.9865. Where I'm sitting, the elevation is 8,210 feet or 2502.408 meters. It's a beautiful spot, and I am so grateful to be able to be here. I'm here having a vacation with some members of my far-flung family.
First, about the ranch's name, or rather, brand. It seems that the ranch in named after the brand, which you can see in this lovely painting by E. Griffiths, above. It's a simple brand, the capital letter C over a U, rotated 90 degrees to the right, read as "lazy" -- because it's lying down. If you want to know more about reading brands, I think Jimmy Stamp's 2013 article at the Smithsonian, Decoding the Range: The Secret Language of Cattle Branding: Venture into the highly regulated and fascinating world of bovine pyroglyphics, is the best.
When I go to a new place to hike or camp, I like to learn about the flora and fauna. I don't think I've ever hiked or ridden in the Middle Park of Colorado, so I had a lot to learn. This is the first weekend of the season, so delightful young wranglers weren't quite up to answering my questions. I started taking photographs and notes, and staffers Nancy and Mike leant me their floras and field guides (I couldn't find a Rocky Mountain field guide in California before I started on the trip East).
So this is the start of a series on what I saw -- that I could identify.
Oh, and C Lazy U is on Facebook: C Lazy U Ranch and twitter: @C_LAZY_U_RANCH The hashtag #CLazyURanch is also used.
